Kathryn D. Sullivan, the former NASA astronaut who has been running the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on a temporary basis for the past year, finally received U.S. Senate confirmation for the job March 6.

Sullivan, who previously served as NOAAโ€™s chief scientist and deputy administrator, became acting under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and acting NOAA administrator when Jane Lubchenco stepped down as the head of the $5 billion-a-year science agency in February 2013.
