ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems said April 10 that it has delivered the imaging payload for GeoEye’s GeoEye-2 optical Earth observation satellite to prime contractor Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Sunnyvale, Calif.
Slated to launch in early 2013 aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket, GeoEye-2 is designed to capture black-and-white imagery of the Earth’s surface at 0.34-meter ground resolution. The Exelis-built payload, which consists of a telescope, sensor subsystem and outer barrel assembly, will also deliver color imagery.
GeoEye Chief Operating Officer Bill Schuster, in a statement, commended Exelis for its on-time delivery of GeoEye-2’s imaging payload.
Dulles, Va.-based GeoEye picked Lockheed Martin in March 2010 to build GeoEye-2. Exelis — formerly ITT Geospatial Systems of Rochester, N.Y. — was selected to begin work on the GeoEye-2 imaging system in October 2007.
