WASHINGTON — The U.S. Space Force announced a launch window for the next mission of the X-37B reusable spaceplane. The eighth flight of the Boeing-built plane, officially designated Orbital Test Vehicle-8 (OTV-8), is scheduled to lift off no earlier than August 21 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

This upcoming mission continues the X-37B program’s pattern of flying long-duration, secretive, and tech-forward flights aimed at bolstering U.S. dominance in space operations and experimentation. This time, the payloads include experiments from the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Defense Innovation Unit: a laser communications demonstration and a quantum inertial sensor.

The laser comms demonstration involves high-bandwidth inter-satellite laser communications systems, a capability that has become increasingly important as military space architectures move toward distributed, resilient networks.

“OTV-8’s laser communications demonstration will mark an important step in the U.S. Space Force’s ability to leverage commercial space networks as part of proliferated, diversified, and redundant space architectures,” said U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman.

The OTV-8 mission will also carry a quantum inertial sensor experiment, which seeks to address the challenge of maintaining precise navigation when GPS signals are unavailable or compromised. Traditional inertial navigation systems suffer from drift over time, but quantum sensors promise increased accuracy by leveraging the quantum properties of atoms to measure acceleration and rotation.

“Testing this tech will be helpful for navigation in contested environments where GPS may be degraded or denied,” Saltzman said. 

These quantum sensors could prove valuable for deep space and cislunar operations, where GPS coverage doesn’t exist and traditional navigation methods become unreliable. 



Manufactured by Boeing, the X-37B resembles a miniature space shuttle, designed for autonomous flight and repeated use. Since its first launch in 2010, it has logged over 4,200 days in orbit. “With each successive flight, the X-37B has demonstrated adaptability and flexibility by hosting diverse experiments and pioneering new orbital regimes,” said Michelle Parker, vice president of Boeing Space Mission Systems.

The spaceplane is currently being prepared for launch at Boeing’s facility at Kennedy Space Center. 

The Fifth Space Operations Squadron within Space Delta 9 operates the X-37B in partnership with the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office.

The X-37B’s most recent mission, OTV-7, concluded on March 7, 2025, when it landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, after spending 908 days in orbit. 

Beyond its technical achievements, the X-37B plays a role in the geopolitical chess match between the U.S. and China. In recent years, the Chinese have accelerated development of their own reusable spaceplane, known to Western observers as Shenlong, or “Divine Dragon.” Its missions closely mirror those of the X-37B — long-duration orbital flights, secretive payloads and soft landings after months in space.
