Florida Todayโ€™s John Kelly warns that the U.S. space program is facing real political peril with the nation in a deep budget crisis at the same time NASA is entering what outsiders will see as a slack period for the agency.

โ€œThe perception that not much is happening could be dangerous for the space agency if politicos shouting โ€˜$20 billion for what?โ€™ get heard in a time when the rising cost of health care, taking care of our aging population, securing the nation and other priorities face financial pressures,โ€ Kelly writes.

The solution, he says, is for NASA to gear up a public relations campaign to make sure the agencyโ€™s successes and progress are known and the American people understand what they are getting for their $18 billion space investment.
